Sweden has effectively overcome what appears to be the final significant obstacle on its path to becoming the 32nd member of the alliance. This was achieved as a result of the president of Hungary’s approval of a measure on Tuesday, which establishes Hungary’s eligibility to join NATO. Hungary was the final member of the alliance to express its support when Sweden submitted its application to join NATO in 2022, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This was completed prior to Sweden’s submission of its application.
