State Department issues global alert for LGBTQ violence

The State Department issued a global security alert and cautionary statement on Friday, warning against “the prospect of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”

An “increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events” is noted in the State Department bulletin. In October 2023, the most recent global threat warning was issued.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued an alert last week that cautioned against the “potential targeting of LGBTQIA+-related events and venues.” On Friday, this notification was transmitted.

According to the statement, “Foreign terrorist organizations or their supporters may attempt to exploit the increased attendance at events associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month.” In June, Pride Month is observed throughout the Western world, including the United States, with a plethora of events and celebrations.

The State Department bulletin is designed for international travel; however, CBS News has received concerns from two sources regarding a domestic threat from ISIS.

The Joint Counterterrorism Assessment Team also issued guidance in May regarding violent extremist attacks, plotting, and messaging that targeted the LGBTQIA+ community. The FBI, DHS, and the National Counterterrorism Center provided input to this committee, which subsequently issued the recommendations. The incident that transpired in October 2023 was identified in the document. A user of a prominent American video game company posted videos in which they publicly declared their allegiance to Hamas and ISIS and called for the execution of such attacks. The guidance promoted a more intimate relationship between public safety officials and the LGBTQIA+ community.

“”We will persist in our efforts to evaluate the threat environment, provide the American public with updates, and protect our homeland in conjunction with other nations.” On Friday, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement that encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity to their local law enforcement and to remain vigilant.
