Bratislava is situated in Slovakia. According to his Facebook page and the Slovak government, Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times on Wednesday and is currently in a life-threatening condition. The assassination occurred as Fico emerged from a government meeting in the town of Handlova, which is situated approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava. The tragic event shocked the small nation and had a ripple effect throughout Europe.
The 59-year-old pro-Russian leader was still receiving treatment for several hours after suffering an abdominal wound, according to Defense Minister Robert Kalina. Kalina informed reporters outside the hospital where Fico was receiving treatment for his injuries.
He stated that Fico’s operation was not yet complete and described his condition as “extraordinarily critical.”
According to the government, at least four bullets were fired from outside a cultural center in Handlova, which is situated approximately 140 kilometers (85 miles) northeast of the capital. Fico was addressing his supporters at the time.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, who was briefing reporters in conjunction with the defense minister, disclosed that the assassination attempt was motivated by “plain political motive” and that a suspect had been apprehended at the site. In a social media post, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár also referred to it as an assassination attempt.
Fico was initially transported to a regional hospital by vehicle and subsequently transported to an elevated location by helicopter, as a result of the critical nature of the situation.
According to the Slovak TASR news agency, the incident was verified by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lubos Blaha during a parliamentary session, and the legislature was adjourned until further notice.
The police promptly secured the area, and photographs and video footage documented the arrest of at least one individual. According to Slovak media outlets, the individual in question is a 71-year-old male.
There is no known reason or additional suspects for the assassination of the polarizing senior lawmaker.
The injured premier was hurriedly loaded into a vehicle by security personnel, who then fled at high speed, as documented on camera. Afterward, surveillance footage captured him being transported to a hospital in the city of Banska Bystrica on a stretcher while being enveloped in blankets as he was transferred to a helicopter.
Fico’s political heritage and political viewpoints
According to the BBC, Fico has been in office for three mandates, during which he has presided over his country for an estimated ten years, which is the longest tenure of any predecessor.
Fico and his Marxist Smer, or Direction, party emerged victorious in the Slovakian parliamentary elections on September 30. Fico made a political revival after campaigning on a pro-Russian and anti-American platform.

He was previously removed from office in response to corruption allegations, which included allegations of involvement in the homicide of a journalist who was conducting an investigation into his time as premier.
Critics have expressed concern that Slovakia, a member of the European Union, may abdicate its pro-Western stance under Fico and emulate Hungary’s populist, autocratic Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is a close ally of Vladimir Putin.
Thousands of individuals have consistently demonstrated against Fico’s policies in the capital and throughout Slovakia.
The assassination occurs three weeks before the 27-nation European Union Parliament elections, during which hard-right and populist parties are expected to make significant gains.
European, American, and Slovak leaders respond.
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova, a political adversary of Fico, denounced the “brutal and merciless” attack on the premier.
