A British boxer passed away after losing on his professional debut in London, according to an official. Malam Varela struck Sherif Lawal in the head during the fourth round of a six-round middleweight bout that was scheduled to take place on Sunday at Harrow Leisure Centre. Lawal was taken down. The referee waived it off to allow paramedics to attend to Lawal. Despite being transported to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. He was 29 years old at the time.On Monday, the British Boxing Board of Control issued a social media post expressing its condolences to the family of Sherifdeen Lawal in the wake of his tragic passing following his boxing contest on Sunday. “The sentiments of all those involved in boxing in Great Britain are with them during this difficult period.”
On social media, Warren Boxing Management expressed their condolences to Sherif’s family, friends, coaches, and all those who were close to him during this tragic time.
In recent years, additional boxers have lost their lives as a consequence of injuries sustained in the ring. Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, an 18-year-old Mexican boxer, passed away five days after she was struck unconscious and injured in a Montreal ring in 2021.
Patrick Day, a 27-year-old boxer, passed away in 2019 due to a traumatic brain injury sustained during a violent takedown during a fight in Chicago. In the same year, Maxim Dadashev, a 28-year-old Russian welterweight prospect, and Hugo Alfredo Santillan, a 23-year-old Argentine lightweight, both succumbed to injuries sustained in the arena.
