Paris’ Champs-Elysees became a communal picnic blanket for an unexpected lunch

The cupola of Notre Dame Cathedral has been adorned with a cross.

On Sunday, the Champs-Élysées, the most renowned thoroughfare in the French capital, was transformed into a vast picnic blanket as approximately 4,000 individuals sat in the sun and relished an outdoor meal.

The picnickers who were fortunate enough to be chosen were awarded complimentary hampers that contained a variety of delicacies from some of Paris’ most renowned chefs, such as inventive sandwiches and puff pastries, through a random drawing.

The food was prepared in eight temporary kitchens that were erected along the avenue. Restaurants along the avenue, including the renowned Fouquet’s and McDonald’s, furnished the food.

Paris Giant Picnic
On Sunday, May 26, 2024, the Comité Champs-Élysées organized a massive picnic on the Champs-Élysées in front of the Arc de Triomphe, during which individuals consumed their meals.

The event was held precisely two months prior to the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris. The seating area was a 216-meter (236-yard) long tablecloth that extended from the Arc de Triomphe to the intersection of Avenue George V.

According to the coordinators, the tablecloth was produced in France from 100% recycled fibers and had a total surface area of 4,212 square meters (45,338 square feet).

The picnickers were also visited by Mayor Anne Hidalgo. In the past, the Champs-Élysées Committee has organized additional open-air events, such as the world’s largest dictation event and a mass movie screening.
