On Thursday, a prosecutor’s office reported that five individuals were murdered and another was wounded in an armed attack in Acapulco, Mexico. The resort city, which has experienced a lot of cartel violence, found ten more bodies just three days prior to this incident.
The most recent assault took place at a grocery store situated in a handicrafts market near the primary tourist avenue of the renowned Pacific coastal city.
The prosecutor’s office in Guerrero state, where Acapulco is situated, issued a statement indicating that it was conducting an investigation into the attack, which resulted in the deaths of four males and a woman, as well as the wounding of another individual.
According to the local public security office, six of the victims were discovered on an avenue near a market on Monday night.
The bodies were reportedly tossed from a vehicle, according to the local media.
Three individuals were killed in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood murder, while an additional individual was shot and killed in the tourist district of the city.
Recent violence in Acapulco
The affluent and famous used to visit Acapulco, but in the last decade, murder has rendered it one of the world’s most violent cities, scaring off foreign tourists.
Acapulco’s traffic police chief was shot and killed last month on a street far from the resort’s beaches.
In Februarybodies of two males were discovered strangled on the popular Condesa beach in Acapulco. It was claimed that the men’s corpses exhibited “signs of torture by ligature” and “signs of torture around the neck.”
During the same period, at least three individuals were fatally shot on beaches in Acapulco, with one victim being shot by assailants who arrived and fled on a boat.
The ciThe city is still grappling with the aftermath of Category 5 Hurricane Otis, which struck in October. There were at least 52 fatalities, and the majority of hotels were either obliterated or damaged.
GuerGuerrero State is one of the most severely impacted regions in Mexico by drug trafficking. In 2023, 1,890 homicides were committed in the state as a result of disputes between cartels. rero is one of six Mexican states that the U.S. State Department recommends that Americans avoid entirely due to crime and violence.
Since the government of then-president Felipe Calderon initiated a military offensive against drug cartels in 2006, the country has experienced spiraling criminal violence that has resulted in the murder of over 450,000 civilians.
In addition to narcotic trafficking, criminal gangs are engaged in extortion, fuel theft, and people smuggling.
Mexico haIn anticipation of the June 2 elections, Mexico has also been the scene of a recent surge in political violence. According to Data Civica, an NGO, over twenty-two politicians have been murdered since September of last year. One mayoral candidate was fatally shot last month, shortly after she commenced her campaign.
